Picking The Groom's Ring

Men’s Wedding Bands:

So He Doesn’t Want His Ring to Bling

By Sara San Angelo

We’ve all heard the stories and seen the videos. Blood-vessel-bursting Bridezillas throwing flower arrangements and firing Maids of Honor. It’s enough to worry about if the cake is going to be ready on time or if Uncle Teddy is going to show up drunk, but now, your hubby-to-be doesn’t want the matching platinum channel-set baguette diamond bands that you’ve had your heart set on.

Before you call the whole thing off, be thankful that the 21st century has seen many changes in wedding band etiquette. Men and women are no longer “required” to wear matching rings. It is perfectly acceptable to wear different styles, and even, different metal bands. Your fiancé will undoubtedly have different tastes than you as well as different daily activities. He may need something sturdy that can take a beating and not bend out of shape. If he works with his hands all day, he may want something simple and light so it will not interfere with his work (how will that diamond inlay really look caked with sawdust?). He may even be allergic to the ring of your choice.

Here are some different types of metal to consider:

  • Gold / White Gold- A traditional choice of ring, gold is one of the softer metals and bends easily. It may not be suitable for people with metal allergies
  • Silver Rings- Less expensive than gold but very soft and may tarnish. Also may not be suitable for people with metal allergies
  • Platinum Rings- Much more expensive than gold, but one of the hardest metals and is hypoallergenic. Resists tarnish but very heavy
  • Titanium Wedding Rings - Growing in popularity, it is a very hard metal and 100% hypoallergenic. Also very light weight
  • Stainless Steel Wedding Rings - The most affordable wedding ring, but also a very durable ring for a man.
  • Tungsten Rings - Four times harder than titanium when mixed with carbide and virtually indestructible. Much heavier than titanium

So while your beating up the wedding singer and interrogating the minister, remember, it’s his day too. Let him feel comfortable with the wedding ring he has to wear the rest of his life, even though it may not be a perfect match. If you do, your rings will last as long as your love for each other.
